The water cascaded down like a broad braid of silken hair! I stood very still, on the slippery rocks trying to find a balance as the cold water gurgled past my shaky legs. One wrong move and I could tumble down to disastrous consequences!

I wanted to shoot the river as it peaked at the top from where I stood, and flowed as a dynamic, throbbing, living entity majestically into the distance. The forests, lush green and intense followed along the liquid soul-road of the forest.

Rivers like this end up as a trickle when mankind steps in and harnesses them in giant dams for agriculture, electricity and controlled irrigation. However a river alone cannot supply to the cities of today. So we see techniques like rainwater harvesting that were present from the Chola kingdom supplementing them. Much however needs to be done.

Water as nature has provided is sufficient, though our inequitable expansion of population in different cities has only increased demands disproportionate to the supply. In such situations we need to be careful in how we preserve the existing water tables and keep innovating techniques like rainwater harvesting to sustain this nature’s resource.
