When I first saw it, I could only absorb a portion at a time as the cascading fountainhead took our breath away. The giant 86 feet tall and 161 feet wide structure spills about 2.8mn cubic feet of water every day!
In the center, Neptune, the god of the sea rides a shell shaped chariot pulled by two sea horses. The triton, a mermaid like creature, forms the escort that guide each sea horse. One horse is calm and the other restive symbolizing the changing passions of the sea. The statues of Abundance and Salubrity flank the sides.
The Trevi Fountain is not only Rome’s largest Baroque fountain; it is also considered the most beautiful. It’s often regarded, as the greatest show seen in a while as the thunderous water tumbles forward over rocks and petrified vegetation.
The fountain dates back to the ancient Roman times since the construction of the Aqua Virgo Aqueduct in 19BC that provided water to the Roman baths and fountains of central Rome. It’s said that the Aqua Virgo or Virgin Waters is named in honor of a young Roman girl who led thirsty soldiers to the source of the spring to drink. The fountain was built near the aqueduct, at the junction of three streets from where it got its name, the Trevi Fountain (tre vie).
Pope Salvi initiated the project in 1743. It was built at very less cost as the new Pope Clement in 1762 financed the works with the 3rd extraction of the Lotto game to pay for it. Hence we can thank gambling that paid for it! Further, city workers sweep a collection of about 3000 Euros everyday to buy the special vouchers from nearby supermarket, Caritas, to help the needy.
I soaked in scenes of love as the young at heart warmed up to an electrical intimacy rarely felt in any scenic edifice. The rhythmic flow of water drops move away in concentric circles at the edges of the water. The azure-magenta sky tinted the various shades of boysenberry buildings to lend an intense air of romantic drama.
In the midst of all the ebullient revelry, the ecstatic fiancé on the right displayed her new ring; whilst the formally adorned new couple in the center tenderly acknowledged their love for each other.
What a breathtaking arena of joy!
